EPISODE #041 BY JULI HOLZ

12/15/2014

Music stays forever. Maybe this is the most important message by 24-year old Juli Holz, the young artist producing electronic music that she sings in German language. Music has definitely stayed with Juli since she started learning the piano at the age of 11. Since then she has come a long way, from soul to hip-hop to techno, from home recordings to record releases, from the intimate space of her bedroom to the open stages of clubs and concert halls. Love, lust, the metropolis, the clubs, the people; loneliness, euphoria and melancholy: those are the big topics in Juli Holz's lyrics. Hailing from the small east German town of Erfurt, it are Juli's parents that first influence her at a very early age. Prince, Goldie and soul music are played around her home and when she is at the age to go out, hip-hop is the predominant music in the local scene in the late 1990s. But after visiting Berlin's infamous techno temple Berghain for the first time at the age of 18, she is immediately infected by electronic music and its democratic production principle. She has been making some music before, but from this day on, she has to 'follow the call of the bass drum', as she calls it herself. She swaps the piano for a midi-controlled keyboard and starts producing romantic electronic ballads together with Maria (now Chapeau Claque) under the name of “Zweiekkenkreis”. Their first release is already recognized and recommended by one of Germanys most renowned electronic music critics, Bleed from De:Bug magazine. Still, shortly after the two girls decide to go their own separate ways, and Juli starts to seriously work on her own sound and, to sing. While producing her own music, writing her own lyrics and putting it all together, Juli also starts to play her music to other people, first at private parties, but quickly at small venues in her home town and in Weimar, a city known for its rich cultural history and renowned art university. But other people also begin to recognize her talent. Berlin-based producer and DJ Oliver Koletzki has just had his first major success with “Der Mückenschwarm” and is looking for talented newcomers for his freshly started label Stil vor Talent when he stumbles upon Juli's music. It shall take another three years until her first EP “Tränen auf dem Dancefloor” is released, but in this time, Juli moves to Berlin and the city's extensive nightlife and mesh of emotions become the backdrop of her poetic techno, as one might term it. Her songs express a lasting hope for love that is embedded in a world of contrasts, somewhere between radical hedonistic moments and the loneliness of the big city. While her voice is mostly whispered, these soft melodies are underlined by warm synthesizers, the never ending stomp of the bass drum and a clear vision of electronic music that is influenced by old and new. One can hear the soul of R&B and deep house, the straightness of techno, the weirdness of electronica of the likes of Daf or Kraftwerk as well as the pop appeal of German and international singers such as Jochen Distelmeyer, Peter Licht, Nina Hagen, James Murphy, Erlend Oye or Justine Electra. After her first release, she contributes the track “Zuckerwatte” to Oliver Koletzki's album “Großstadtmärchen” that is played by RadioEins, Fritz and MotorFM and becomes one of the most successful singles of the album. At the end of 2010 she releases her second EP “Winterabend” together with the producer Daso; and Juli Holz continues to perform live, something that has always been very important to her. In the space of the club she feels the close connection between her and the audience, while she stands on stage, separated only by the glow of her laptop and the microphone in front of her. While joining The Koletzkis on some of their tour dates, she has also already played in some of Berlin's most famous locations such as Watergate, Maria or Bar 25. Also, she has worked with other musicians and producers such as Jin Choi or Chopstick and Johnjon and has been remixed by the likes of David August or Oliver Koletzki himself. At the moment, Juli Holz is working on her first album that shall see the light of day at the end of next year. Until then, she continues to transform her own experiences into poetic electronic harmonies.

EPISODE #040 BY GAS

12/01/2014

After discovering a passion for nightlife, gAs (a.k.a. Enrico Gasperini) started spinning vinyls at the age of eighteen, while studying Computer Sciences; his love for electronic music drove him to establish a close partnership with an underground record store specialized in Detroit Techno, called MainStreet Records.

The time spent collecting and carefully listening to the sounds that have been the landmark and the inspiration for the birth of contemporary House Music made him grow quickly as an artist, and day by day he has become a fixture on his city’s club scene, gaining many residencies in the most renowned venues and a widespread acclaim.
During his DJ sets, he loves mixing House and Techno in a unique way, layering different grooves and adding many a-capellas and tools on top.
Thanks to his deep knowledge of Analogue Synthesis and of Sound Design, and thanks to his great skills in manipulating music softwares, gAs has also received positive feedback since he started producing his own works: focused on low frequencies, his tracks are characterized by warm and fat bass lines, dark voice drops, looped synth melodies and complex vocal rhythm patterns.
Currently he’s an active member of Memento Records, an independent electronic label founded by Idriss D and Fabrizio Maurizi; he’s also started a more housey side project, “gAs vs Linuz”, with his friend and musical soul mate Lino Pugliese. Their tracks have been released on Danilo Vigorito’s Orion Muzik.
He worked as Project Manager for Main Street Festival, a 3-days event with live bands and DJs produced in Southern Italy.
His track Ray Of Light was played and supported by Luciano who signed it to his Cadenza Lab label.

EPISODE #037 BY KRUSE & NUERNBERG

11/10/2014

Kruse & Nuernberg have been a constant presence in the spotlight of the deep house scene for a while now. With championing releases like Lovers n' Fighters on Noir Music, (a Beatport Deep House Number 1 for weeks) in 2010, Daze Without You (Resident Advisor Number 2) on Liebe*Detail in 2011 or their Off Course EP on Andre Crom's OFFRecordings in 2013 they have shown a consistency that few others can brag about.
Very few producers embrace the concept of "Teamwork" as literally as Florian Kruse and Nils Nuernberg. Both born and raised in a rural area near thriving Hamburg but with different musical roots and influences, both passionate djs in their own right, both outgoing and always eager for good fun and; above all, both promising music creators. It only took an encounter to set it all off... Once they got together to create their first hip-moving beat, it all became so natural and fluid that several years and influences later, we find them both having studios in Hamburg and Berlin and being at the forefront of a revolutionary deep house revival all over the world, turning dancefloors into frenzy with an always thankful, shiny smile on their faces and enjoying the occational silly, shallow prank, always trying to create good memories.
A lot has indeed happened since their first release in 2007… Growing their own style, always deep but intense and bouncy, flirting sometimes with soul, sometimes with techno and always with an overall feel of good vibes and energy translated directly into moving feet and sexy dancing in dancefloors all around the globe.
They were quickly spotted by some of the hottest and most respected labels around releasing heavily accepted works on Noir, Liebe*Detail, Stil Vor Talent, Exploited, Lazy Days, Rejected, Moodmusic, and more recently OFF Recordings (becoming part of their steady roster of core artists) while also remixing names as massive as Dennis Ferrer or Groove Armada. They also went a step forward and launched their own label in 2008, Save Room, a place for like-minded talent and another outcome for their incesant flow of inspiration featuring (and even propelling) artists like Huxley, Sasse, DZeta N Basile, Topspin & Dmit Kitz, Dirty Culture and more.
Proof of their prolific nature, is their full lenght album released in 2012 on Lazy Days and accounting remix work by Wolf+Lamb, Mario Basanov, Spirit Catcher & Fred Everything and their work under the Wiretappeur moniker, also praised into the likes of Digweed's Bedrock platform.
Their lives now, of course, alternates between flights, hotels and clubs, they are still good friends after such a long time, and as they face thousands of sweaty dancers all over the world, they keep the smile high thinking how proud they are to be creating the soundtrack for some of the most fun nights in people's lives.

EPISODE #033 BY ANIE'

10/13/2014

Unfortunately, where the house and techno scene is concerned, the prejudice still prevails that it has to be a man, who sends the hard beats from the stages of the world to the masses.
Why else are there only 3 women in the Top 50 DJ Charts, as opposed to 47 men? It seems to be easily forgotten that electronic music has various aspects to offer and that there are quite a few female DJs / producers, who aspire to more than just looking good with headphones and being familiar with the latest hits.
These are the ones who strive to invent and forward harder sounds, without neglecting their audience and their fanbase. If you take all that and add some sexyness, you cannot get past the name ANIÉ. She could have easily turned into a member of a rockband or ended up singing “It’s raining men” under the shower, but no, such a development was not to be, ever since as a small child she put on the headphones and never looked back.
ANIÉ has been on her way as DJ and producer for over a decade now and is a well experienced artist. She is fascinated with the wide variety of musical elements and has an unlimited imagination of how to use them.
ANIÉ is a musical artwork, a symbiosis of melodies and expressing emotions through them. Inspired as she is by many genres, her heart is in electronic music, in what she describes as “girlie techno”. She clearly favours not the standard, but the combination of passionate basses with soulful melodies.
ANIÉ is open for musical experiments and new projects, and never stands still in her work. This is clearly audible in her productions. Her motto is to simply do what she likes doing.
Electronic music is a heartfelt matter to her, which she feels immensely passionate about, since it is what makes her and her fanbase happy.

EPISODE #032 BY CIPRIAN IORDACHE

10/06/2014

I’m Romanian but I do not like eating sarmale, sausages or mici (romanian traditional food), don’t have a favorite soccer team and I haven’t been with a prostitute, yet! I believe this is more than enough to describe my personal life.
Professionally, I began my career in a club in the city of Suceava, summer of 2005 followed by 3 other gigs in my birthplace, the city of Braila.
I first started producing in 2009 and in 2010 I had my first release at the Romanian label Magnetik Groove, containing remixes from Kozo(arpiar), Luca M and Dirty Culture.
In 2010, together with Razvan Mangu aka NSC we created Microtech Records, which generated collaborations with several important producers and DJs like Mendo, Yaya (Desolat), Alex Dimou, Remerc, Mario Aureo, Luca M, Dirty Culture, Filthy Rich, Macromism, Emerson Todd, Tony Dee, Julian Perez, Paolo Driver, Alberto Sola, Yapacc, Francesco Bonora, Fabio Neural, Egal 3, Marcus Gehring, Dorian Chavez, Simone Vitullo, Carlo Lio, Matt Brown, Alex Moments and many others.
The collaborations with Alexuuu & TDK were very successful . The track Bonita-Alexuuu & TDK feat. Ciprian Iordache spent two months in the Vibe Fm charts reaching the 3rd place. I had the privilege to have some of my tracks remixed by several of the most well known producers and DJs such as Fabio Neural, Remerc, Alberto Sola, Kozo(apriar), Luca M, Simone Vitullo and Dirty Culture.
The year 2011 brought collaborations with some very important names from the Romanian clubbing scene. I collaborated with Adrian Eftimie for a remix released by my label Microtech Records followed by an original mix with Christian Green, under the Spanish label, Rare Music. At the moment I am very pleased to be working in a project with a very talented DJ and producer who doesn’t need any introduction, Pagal. Furthermore, I can pride myself with official remixes for Nick Kamarera, Voxis and Raoul Russu( remix released by Roton, found on Beatport and some specialty sites).
I was happily surprised to see my songs in the track lists of some of the best internationally known DJs such as Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Luciano, Paco Osuna, Maya Jane Coles, Federico Grazzini and many others.

One of his biggest (and admittedly most commercial) hits to date was for venerated house label, Strictly Rhythm, and it went straight to number two on Traxsource’s illustrious chart at the time of release.  As such, the Blacksoul sound is alive with synth stabs, house music’s emotion and a bright sense of colour that comes from plenty of big chords and diva-styled vocals.
A DJ set from the veteran, meanwhile, takes in a range of club-ready, out-there house tracks, each imbued and mixed with a sense of groove and rhythm that is designed to keep you dancing, and your hands pumping. It’s no surprise, then, that the likes of Laurent Garnier have been quick to voice their support of this energetic music mogul.

As a result of making a name for himself, Blacksoul also started a label of the same name to help promote other established and upcoming talent alike.
With over 40 releases under its belt from 70 international and domestic musicians and producers, the imprint is surely Croatia’s finest and serves as a bastion for great new music, as does the man’s newly started BLACKSOUL MUSIC FM radio station which provides underground house music 24/7.
When remixing, too, Blacksoul got skills... not only has he remixed for Grammy Award Winner Maurice Joshua, but he’s also turned his hands to Gramophonedzie’s super hit ‘Why Don’t You’.
With an-ever burning passion for fresh electronic sounds, Blacksoul is sure to keep on pushing, well into 2013.

EPISODE #017 BY MAC GREGOR

6/16/2014

Mac Gregor, is a DJ out of Paris who began mixing but quickly found himself in production. A fan of House music's early sound, including Daft Punk and the French touch, it's only natural that he veered towards dancefloor-oriented electronic music and began to collect singles.
His DJ sets, always eclectic, sensual and unequivocally dancefloor, result in a House sound best described as electro-punchy. Skilled in a very fat sound, his sets have met with great success.
In early 2006, he joined with fellow producer Kama and the Balazkos to create his own label Pumpz Recordings. Their first releases are already spinning on the turntables of some of the world's biggest DJs.
Maxi after maxi, he has been collaborating with -and remixed by- several international artists: Zoo brazil (Get Physical), Da fresh, Pig & Dan, Gino's And Snake (Notorious Elektro)... more recently Damon Jee & Olivier Giacomotto and Gaby Newman (Vendeta, Ministry of Sound)
In 2007, he participates to the setting up of Heatwave records, joins the French Kiss collective, and under that name he produces "Sofine ep" remixed by Kiko.
The richness of his "Culture Club" and his overture to musical fusion render his DJ sets original and always influenced by his funky sound. Mac Gregor plays quite often and shares the scene with artists he particularly likes.
In parallel, Mac Gregor works on his productions together with Kama under the name "Kama and Mac Gregor".
